ASSISTKINGS QUARTERLY VOL. 3
ASSISTKINGS QUARTERLY VOL.III
Nine different players achieved 2+ assists in a single match over the last international break (Depay, Jakub Jankto, Sterling (3), De Bruyne (3), Bernardo, Vedat Muriqi, Milinkovic-Savic, Tadic & Thiago), with three players from Manchester City grabbing a disgusting 8 assists & scoring 3 goals in a 24 hour period (Sterling, De Bruyne & Bernardo) for their respective nations.
Yet the assists have only continued to flow as the Carabao Cup matches begin, the league match days resume and the depth of every squad is tested and stretched to the limit.
Somehow we've seen crazy occurrences
so soon out of
the gates in 19/20: Kevin De Bruyne cannot stop his excellence for Manchester City & Belgium, Raheem Sterling continues his rise as one of the best players in the world (8 goals, 1 assist) and Ajax's Hakim Ziyech and Dusan Tadic keep the freight train rolling down the tracks with a half century of chances created and a bundle of assists on the campaign already.
As for those who's excellence didn't quite surprise you or I but shocked many who've forgotten: Roma's Lorenzo Pellegrini, Monaco's Islam Slimani and Arsenal's "young" center back Calum Chambers (playing at right back) have all grabbed 3 assists in a single match since AssistKings Vol. 2 (the Chambers performance was no fluke) and in doing so, all led their clubs to victory.
Algeria's
Islam Slimani grabbed his haul
vs French side Brest while his countryman, Riyad Mahrez, has been devastating for Pep's City.
These players (among many others) have wasted no time indulging in mass attacking play, chances galore and lots and lots of goals...while the assists overfloweth in 2019/20.
After tallying nonstop last season, AssistKings Quarterly is finding out how hard the task will be this campaign.
By October 1st last time out, most players were stuck on 3-4 tops; in 19/20 we've seen De Bruyne, Dusan Tadic and Hakim Ziyech almost at 10!
Can we keep up?

Raheem Sterling is unbelievable.
He's eclipsed anything his critics ever demanded of him whilst pushing the envelope far beyond what his biggest supporters could've imagined...even back in his casual diving / point blank shanking persona of 2014 and 2015, Sterling has risen high above it all.
After his transfer saga (that led to a big money move to Manchester City), he was always tipped for a spell full of failure, gluttony and ruin after many English and Liverpool fans had forsaken him, believing the speedster would never deliver on his boundless potential...but things didn't work out that way.
Pep Guardiola arrived in Manchester licking his chops at the sight of Sterling, Sane,
De Bruyne, Aguero, David Silva and the soon to arrive Bernardo. He knew exactly what to do with these pieces, yet more interestingly for all of us watching: he made Raheem Sterling the centerpiece of the entire operation.
Here we were thinking Raheem Sterling would be the perfect winger to answer the call for a goal every so often, a speedy guy to wear down fullbacks for 80 minutes a match so De Bruyne, Silva and Aguero could create space and finish.
Instead, Pep Guardiola took the scathing runs, the inherent dynamism and versatility that was always omnipresent in his game (coupled with the space the #7 indelibly creates) and forced the talent around him to take full advantage of his filthy pace and supernatural footballing IQ.
Sterling had to work his ass off to finally harness his body's raging, uncontrollably fast movements in the finishing department, his body going quicker than his brain at times. Anyone who's ever played the game knows this well: busting a gut for 80 yards, dribbling through a few players while barely retaining possession as a defender hounds on your heels and then attempting to finish past an on-rushing / well positioned / world class goalkeeper is an extremely hard thing to do...especially when you're an incredibly fast player like Raheem.
He's simply so full of pace there have been times where it's apparent the entire pitch is there for him to take at will.
In the past, Sterling freed up so many options with his pace to the point he often found himself running out of real estate. Now, he pulls the ball back, still holding up play in the box and gives City and England multiple bites at the counter attacking apple, long after many other attacking units would've lost the opportunity.
Thanks to his speed, movement and smart runs, we've seen the tiny winger go completely unnoticed in the box on occasion, tapping in easy finishes after profiting from his stealthy awareness and deception.
The City #7 finds himself maniacally unlucky in the final third too, hitting the post 3x (as well as setting Phil Foden up for a shot off the woodwork vs Preston) and seeing supplied shots cleared off of the line, or his brilliant assist to Jesus reviewed and called back for offsides vs Spurs...the D'yer Ma'ker Englishman is at the heart of everything for Man City.
Sterling's scored four hat tricks (and counting) in 2019, bagging six braces too
(inc. two other "hat tricks": the goal stolen from him by Jesus in the 2019 FA Cup Final and the wrongful offside vs Spurs in the Champions League).
His pure class isn't limited to Pep's Manchester City: he's been able to translate this greatness on to the national team stage.
After Sterling finally ended his 3 year and 5 day international goalscoring duck (October 9th, 2015-October 14th 2018), the Englishman now has 8 goals & 6 assists in the last calendar year alone, dishing his first international hat trick of assists & scoring a goal vs Kosovo, snapping 2 goals in a win vs Spain and a hat trick of goals over the Czech Republic.
We'll see if Guardiola and Southgate can manage Sterling's minutes and rest him adequately so he can avoid wearing down or suffering injuries in the final stages of the campaign.
City look to be going for every title in sight while England aim to win their first title since 1966 when Euro 2020 begins in June, and Raheem Sterling's high flying form is a mandatory requirement.
Both managers must make it priority #1 to protect Sterling from unnecessary workloads (Guardiola benching him for the 8-0 vs Watford was perfect, but his 80 minutes three days later vs Preston in the CC Cup made no sense). He's been a workhorse for the last three seasons, for both club and country, however the fitness of the forward is paramount for City and England success.
Raheem Sterling will be expected to demonstrate his prowess in the knockout stages of the Champions League and at Euro 2020 (his 4th tournament for England). Anything short may bring up reminders of the City talisman failing to score a tournament goal for England and having only 1 World Cup assist and an earned penalty in Euro 2016 to his name.
But with this new confidence oozing from this English side through the arrivals of Dortmund's Jadon Sancho, Chelsea's Callum Hudson-Odoi, Trent Alexander-Arnold, the consistent brilliance of Harry Kane, and an improved depth in the team, perhaps Sterling can imitate what he does best at City against the biggest international opponents in Europe this summer.
Don't bet against him.

How this man is displaying such panache at the age of 38 is madness, sheer lunatic insanity! This dood was already a 23 year old "veteran" when he played for Spain in the 2002 World Cup!
But here we are...It's now 2019 and Joaquin is still going off in La Liga like it's his birthday party with 50 Cent.
Joaquin has been around La Liga for as long as I've been watching the league, plying his trade at Valencia for the lengthiest of spells.
But what he's been doing at 38 for Real Betis has been mind boggling (as well as his respectable 18/19 output of 7 goals, 3 assists in 37 apps).
Last campaign,
Joaquin scored against Barcelona & drove Betis on to a 4-3 victory over the Catalan giants, defying time and his longtime critics in the Spanish media, though most pundits felt it was a rare streak of light from the winger rather than an indication of his overall form.
Though every time you see Joaquin play is an occasion to be savored.
He is one of those players for whom I created uncredited direct goal contributions for.
Players like Joaquin (even at this age), Hakim Ziyech, Raheem Sterling and the greatest of all time Lionel Messi, have these intangible qualities in which they're at the center of nearly all goals their teams score. Whether those contributions are tallied through official means or not, we have to make sure credit is given for such genius.
Joaquin has proven once again this campaign, going on his 40th birthday, that he's still got what it takes to last a full La Liga campaign and lead fiery underdog Real Betis with some new weapons: the French World Cup winner (and truly one of the most talented footballers I've ever seen) Nabil Fekir and ex-Barca man Cristian Tello.
Joaquin's performance vs Levante was filthy (1 goal, 2 assists and a pass that was shot off the post) however the 38 year old hasn't proven to be some novelty: he's maintained a finesse throughout, even while younger, more agile players like Sergio Canales and William Carvalho fold and bend in midfield (5-1 and 5-2 defeats to Villareal and Barcelona this season). Joaquin has maintained his high levels after 7 appearances, often proving to be Betis's best player on the pitch.
Still, it's a bizarre but obvious specter that follows the Spaniard.
Joaquin plays as if there's something born of madness nipping at his feet, as if there could be an ethereality that haunts him...and we think we know what it is.
Back in late 2006, the Spanish national team had pretty much the same nucleus it would throw out on the pitch while winning Euro 2008 and largely the same for the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, with players like Joaquin and Real Madrid's Raul still in the mix.
But after back to back defeats for the national team (including a horrifying 3-2 qualifier defeat to Northern Ireland), Joaquin came out and made critical comments about manager Luis Aragones's ability to cope with pressure and make proper team selections.
Due to this, Joaquin was only selected a handful of times in 2007 before never appearing for the Spanish national team again.
Excepting Jesus Navas, Spain went without a natural out-and-out winger for the 2008-2012 run, Pedro being another player used out wide by Del Bosque. However, Joaquin wasn't recalled to the Spanish national team.
Despite changes in manager from Aragones to Del Bosque to Lopetegui, Luis Enrique etc, no Spanish coach has been willing (based on current form or nostalgic merits) to give this highly influential jewel of the Spanish game a cap he deserves.

Alongside Sandro Tonali, Nicolo Barella and Stefano Sensi, Lorenzo Pellegrini is another in a line of extremely cultured, well-trained and perfectly adaptable midfielding talent that the Italian national team will be enjoying for the next 15 years.

The man who helped Algeria to the final of the African Nations Cup
(1 goal & 2 assists, scored in a penalty shootout vs Ivory Coast in 3 apps.) moved to Monaco from Leicester this summer and boy are Leicester a little naive to be letting another top class Algerian go for so cheap.
Not only has the big man scored again for Algeria in his only appearance since the Nations Cup victory, he's already buried 4 goals and assisted 4 at his new club Monaco (including his nasty 3 assists and goal haul vs Brest, setting one goal up with a silky smooth lay off, another with a headed knock down and the final to Keita Balde with a lashing cross).
The Algerian is another one of these extremely underrated, under-appreciated players who's talents no know bounds when switched on.
When you consider Slimani, nobody has ever questioned his skills, versatility and resume (2 World Cup goals), the question was always whether managers would actually put him on the pitch to find that out.

Roberto Firmino had an otherworldly 2019 even as he endured a litany of injuries or off the pitch concerns. From a patch over the eye, a DUI arrest or a hamstring problem, he survived it all to help lead Liverpool to the Champions League title.
To follow, he remained fit enough to sustain Brazil to an extremely clean and definitive Copa America title (thanks to the referees) where Firmino registered 2 goals and 3 assists, proving himself as a pivotal player for the national team.
And so, with the Premier League season back in full swing and the first Champions League match day in the books and a second to come, Firmino already has 4 assists, creating a litany of chances for his teammates (2 of them off the post) and grabbing 2 uncredited direct goal contributions, mostly tiny deflections that prevented the uptight officials at Opta from granting "official" assists (Mane goal vs Newcastle).
The Brazilian has been everywhere for Klopp's unstoppable Reds, with an obvious impact even more than last season.
While the headlines simmer about Salah and Mane's rivalry for goals, Bobby Firmino stays in between the two and supplies the two selfish finishers with chance after chance. In fact, the Brazilian should have nearly as many assists as De Bruyne in the Premier League: Firmino has conjured 7 direct goalscoring opportunities set up in 19/20.
Salah can keep his selfishness going (he does have a few assists), Sadio Mane can keep getting pissed (he's been extremely creative, though unlucky this season) but Liverpool's Premier League title hopes hinge completely on Roberto Firmino.
Klopp has made Firmino his conductor far more in the early stages of 2019/2020 in comparison to seasons past, eschewing the crossing abilities of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson for the start of the campaign (the pair still combine for 4 assists).
Simply put, Liverpool's attack is at its most explosive when pinned to Firmino's every touch and as of now, most of his time in orbit on the ball has been golden dreams of symphony.

At 50 key passes in 19/20 thus far, Ajax's Hakim Ziyech continues his unceasing reign as a dominant force on the European scene.
This is a player that'll be around for some time, happily destroying defenses for years to come, gaining in confidence, belief and intelligence with each passing year.
Ziyech has been scary good against top opposition, ruining Bayern Munich, Juventus, Real Madrid and Tottenham last season and building on his higher profile with each passing performance.
We've witnessed the Morocco World Cup star teeing up chances from set pieces, delicately scathing through ball artistry or sending in his vicious crossing deliveries, manufacturing 7 assists and providing 2 chances from which teammates hit the post.
Besides his frenzied cross
vs Lille that
notched his 1st Champions League assist of the group stage (Ziyech also hit the post in the same match), on the weekend in Eredivisie action, he resumed his calculated invention.
After nearly 80 scoreless minutes vs Groningen, he set up Lisandro Martinez for the long range shot that finally broke the deadlock, this goal coming after the Ajax #22 had set up 4 other chances.
Adding to the lead, the Moroccan sent a scooped ball over the top of the defense for a nice Donny Van De Beek (DVB) run into the box. DVB volleyed the ball from Ziyech across the face of goal for the age-less Klaas-Jan Huuntelaar to tap home, gifting Hakim his 4th uncredited direct goal contribution of the season.
With 3 assists since September 14th, 3 goals scored and being the joint-leader in UDGC (tied with Mahrez),
it's an insanity...no: a criminality that no major club has gone and secured the Moroccan's services yet.
This "rejection" Ziyech may feel compels us to believe the player will push even higher to make 19/20 his greatest season yet.

The Dortmund winger has kept up his blistering form following his debut run at Signal Iduna, adding a high volume, range and accuracy to his well-rounded passing game.
Jadon Sancho was slightly anonymous in the Barcelona match, shanking a fantastic attempt from a counter attack high into the sky. Later on, it was Sancho who provided the moment of the match when the Englishman did his cunning best to earn a penalty in the box, suckering Nelson Semedo into a dumb foul. Though the sublime skill wasn't enough for his 3rd UDGC of 19/20 once Barca & Germany #1 Marc-Andre Ter Stegen saved Reus's attempt.
Although Sancho hasn't yet caught fire in the Champions League, the 17 year old has more impressively broken out on the international stage:
During a wild 5-3 qualifier vs Kosovo, Sancho added a brace of goals to his international resume to go alongside his 3 assists, Sancho has most definitely stamped out a place in Southgate's England XI for Euro 2020.
The former City youth star has combined for 4 goals directly with Raheem Sterling in his young England career, the pair posing a frightening question to opposition defenses this summer.

Following the injury to Leroy Sane during the Community Shield, the former PFA Player of the Year winner has gone on a mission to remind Guardiola of his world class qualities.
It's obvious Pep's been won over.
The Algerian has shown time and time again that he fits in right at home among the City elite, whether it be his ferocious free kicks, propensity of dangerous set piece deliveries or his abundance of skill, Mahrez has delivered many points for Guardiola since his City debut last fall.
Just watch as he scores a rip-roaring goal vs Everton before passing the ball to himself up the left wing, all the while using Lucas Digne as a practice cone. The move from Riyad wasn't about pure flash: he split and realigned the Everton back six with one through ball to himself, skipping around Digne before slapping the ball back for an open De Bruyne to slice into the box for his 9th assist.
With that goal the Algerian now has the most uncredited direct goal contributions of any player in all European club competitions (4) and is in the ascendancy under Guardiola.
Despite Leroy Sane's absence, City look just as definitive with Mahrez in attack, beating teams in a more controlled manner.
Considering Sane's ACL injury may keep him out until February or March, the big question isn't "does Mahrez deserve to start over Sane?" as much as it's now:
"will Sane be able to dethrone Mahrez from the City XI?"

SERBIA : 2 assists vs Portugal
Just as his Moroccan partner in crime at Ajax has an astounding 50 chances created and October has only just arrived, his illustrious Serbian teammate Dusan Tadic is narrowly behind him at 43.
Yes, we do take into account how the Ajax tandem have featured in 5-6 more appearances than players from La Liga, Serie A, EPL, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1, though their numbers would likely be close to the same.
We're starting to see old school work ethic turn into a new trend in football: hard work equaling goals and assists from workhorses like Sterling, Ziyech, Bernardo Silva, Serge Gnabry and Antoine Griezmann showing what intensity and drive can accomplish.
He hasn't stopped running his feet or the opposition-box passing festival since his arrival in Amsterdam and his front-pressing intensity has beckoned rewards: the Serb winning possession in the final third 6 times on the season so far.
Tadic has constantly spun beautiful passing webs in the box to Neres, Ziyech and Van De Beek (passing through a Groningen defender's legs only for Donny Van De Beek's goal-bound blast to be cleared from the line).
All 8 of Tadic's assists have come in the last 9 match days, with a potential 9th sent dangling off the bar after Tadic set Ziyech up vs Lille.
2019/20 may not be another year where Ajax stun the world on their way to another Champions League semifinal, but it could be the campaign where Dusan Tadic and Hakim Ziyech battle each other for creative domination.
Tadic leads in assists, Ziyech is top in chances created...let the battle rage on!

This has been a month and a half of KDB trying to make up for lost time and my my my has he done that and more.
He's already grabbed 9 assists on the campaign for Manchester City, 8 in the EPL alone and KDB is well on pace to shatter the record of Thierry Henry's 23 assists in a single Premier League season).
De Bruyne has spread the ball around to many different teammates, assisting Aguero 3x, Gabriel Jesus twice, setting up each of the two Silvas and finding Sterling and Mahrez both.
The Belgian has a pair of 2 assist matches, 3 uncredited direct goal contributions, set Sergio Aguero free for two face-throttling blasts off of the post (both vs Watford), all as he posted 7+ key passes in three separate matches.
In the 8-0 destruction of Watford, KDB could've easily had 5 or 6 assists, sending in untouchable and venomously angled crosses to the back post that no opponent could handle, the clueless Watford defender Mariappa allowing David Silva of all players to head home one of De Bruyne's looping, bending balls to the far post.
Only top shelf players can make defenders' faces appear on milk cartons everywhere and De Bruyne is one of 'em.
Nearly every goal City has scored thus far has generated from the Belgian's feet, whether it be his nasty crosses, his dead ball deliveries, sliding Aguero into the box for the Argentine to grab an assist, spitting out a couple of divine through balls that invited Aguero in for 5 point blank chances vs Watford, 2 of them clanking off the bar, two strikes narrowly blocked on their way in Scott Foster's goal and another one-on-one where Sergio fluffed his lines.
Coupled with his masterful displays for Belgium vs Scotland: 9 key passes, 3 assists and 1 assured strike into the net, there is no player on planet earth engineering as many clear cut chances across the top leagues.
For the duration of 18/19, Lionel Messi was constantly taking the #1 spot for assists and overall dominance in the creative department, whereas the often injured KDB only made our last few lists once he'd recovered.
Now, the roles have reversed as Ernesto Valverde keeps rushing Messi back too soon, the Argentine becoming injury-prone in the same way Pep held KDB back for 85% of 18/19.
Messi's absence and Leroy Sane's injury has paved the way for De Bruyne to reclaim his title as the #1 AssistKing in all of football...though Tadic and Hakim Ziyech are hell hounds not far behind.
