Crime In the City: The Blood and Sex Games of the NFL / It was a Shitty Name After All...right?
And so we've come thus far in the current NFL season with no clear answers, no obvious teams (well maybe one or two who aren't proven contenders as of yet: see LA and KC) or pathways to the Super bowl laid out in front of us.
All we've got is a bunch of thick mist layered with the daily decisions of Josh Gordon or the earphones of Josh Norman being yanked off his head, prompting his greatest game as a Redskin against his former team, no less; Manning and Wentz wasting away in the doldrums of the worst division (or perhaps the most fascinating) in football; Tom Brady and Bill Belichick going it alone, without each other, the length of the season and betting on random free agent acquisitions and a myriad of running backs and bootleg players...yes it sounds familiar, but never have these Patriots under Bill and Tom gone this thin in defense...or in the communication department; Aaron Rodgers suffering through injury, or maybe even crucifying himself for Green Bay's undying love and desire to remove potential future concussion-aided / pill-addled assault allegations from record and public consciousness; Mahomes going for glory and getting it, so far, with a KC defense that leaks more than John Goodman's asshole after Thanksgiving....
We've even seen the Saints quietly plot Super bowl contention with Brees becoming a definitive all-timer, opposing teams, namely MINE, kneeling before him and kissing the ring while he does it so effortlessly.
What I'm wanting to point out of note is Sean McVay's insistence and patience with the run game against Denver, a tough outing that highlighted the Rams maturity for all to see.
What I'm wanting to point out of note is Sean McVay's insistence and patience with the run game against Denver, a tough outing that highlighted the Rams maturity for all to see.
McVay could've gotten scared like he did with Cousins in DC, and thrown the ball a billion times once Denver was in it. Instead, they pounded away and Gurley rewarded them with a 200 yard game.
That sequence of decision making will impact the Rams contention for an NFC Championship game appearance. Let's don't get ahead of ourselves about Super Bowls and the like. This team DOES need home field advantage throughout the playoffs to get to a Super Bowl I firmly believe, but the way they ran the ball against a collected mix of Super bowl champions in Von Miller et.al.
This young team and their wunderkind prodigy of a coach, continues to surprise us.
This young team and their wunderkind prodigy of a coach, continues to surprise us.
Which is not only a sign of greatness, it's an indicator of future consistency. Look at all the best players and teams: they continually shocked and surprised us with each new record, every huge win or championship...
We'll have to see if these Rams and this Mahomes kid keep shocking us.
Looking at the standings, I see a lot of 4-2, 3-3 clubs (3-2, 4-1 for teams who've had a bye) thick in the mire and musty stench of mediocrity and dynamism, middle of the pack- sardine-tight Seattle Seahawks or Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina, Washington, Green Bay, hell even The Patriots, are all teams searching for an identity, not excusing the fact they're all works in progress and playing the games before them without the knowledge of a certified offensive or defensive thrust. These teams are operating on auto-pilot, with either very good or somewhat disastrous results from this faded state.
Then, we've got the teams that are looking up, with all systems go, such as the upstart, surprising Bengals and Ravens, who've survived injuries and father time (in regards to Terrell Suggs unbelievable performances so far this season), The Chargers who've got more weapons for Rivers to dish to than a Ukrainian arms deal instigated by a coked out Harvey Keitel and Tennessee who've matched my preseason predictions in defeating the defending Super bowl champions and doing it with some panache.
It's a wide open league, folks. It will be a bloodbath nearly every Sunday, Monday or Thursday from here on out. Teams will rise and fall at the drop of a hat, at the prick of a needle, or the burn of a candle, you WILL find yourselves asking, screaming into the night "WHY? WHY DID MY 4-2 TEAM LOSE BY 40 TO THE CARDINALS? WHY???"
And nobody will give a shit.
Because next week, you may be putting the same result on a team ten times better than yours. I mean shit, we even saw Dallas, who were the joke of the league a few weeks ago, drop 40 points on Jacksonville.
This should show a statistical drop in completed suicides across the nation, particularly in the AFC South and NFC West regions of America, but a rise of near or attempted suicides as fans lose their minds may increase, throwing objects across the room as they smash their team's hat, replacing it on their head with the "only team that matters": A Make America Great Again hat.
It may be time for Giants fans to wear "Make Eli Manning Good Again Not Even Great Just Good" hats and shirts.
Metropolitan New York people, I smell a marketing opportunity here...
This could be quickly followed by the "Shut the Fuck Up Again, Odell" key chains, shirts and hats.
We will see a naked, bleeding Tom Clancy approach the field of play at a Dolphins game, wielding a Richie Incognito jersey as a weapon.
We will look upon an angry and bewildered Tom Brady as Bill will sub Gronk out of a 24-24 overtime playoff game due to Gronk wearing a #81 Hernandez jersey after scoring the game tying touchdown.
There will be Broncos and Raiders fans arming themselves to the teeth at games in hopes of getting a shot in when Mahomes is about to destroy their team with one final bomb, or extension of the play. The embarrassment, the humiliation, but most importantly, the jealousy has reached a violent fever pitch.
Mutinies will abound under Jon Gruden's stewardship of the OaklandVegas Raiders, with rumors and innuendo flying around about Gruden letting Mack go over a sexual advance from the coach gone wrong.
That's the only way he sends Mack packing right?
If only Gruden's penis was as big as his ego....
If only his team were as certain as his arrogance ....
How in Jesus will Rodgers survive this season? And then what? He writhes through the subzero temperatures in Green bay all the way to a Super Bowl?
Mike McCarthy is dreaming if he believes he can send Rodgers out there for 19, maybe 20 games and he's going to ride this knee injury to Super bowl salvation ...it's irresponsible, reckless and fuck hyperbole, it's stupid to not have had a Plan B in preparation for this guy getting injured, like he does every season now. Either invest in that offensive line, draft offensive linemen, get new coaching for the offensive line, or get a backup who's at a Dalton / Tannehill level or the Packers won't be playing in January year in year out....they'll be watching a doped up legend of a quarterback throwing shoes at Danica whilst blasting "You Can Call Me Al" and the cops showing up, with arrests and allegations made, ESPN delving into the mind of Aaron Rodgers on Outside The Lines....Jeremy Schapp detailing the injections, the pills, the fits of crying, the vague memory of where he put the 2010 Super Bowl ring... It will be a disaster and it will be shameful...
Losers are not strangers to disgrace, but the most ruthless winners of all, embrace the shame, sleaze and the muck as a badge: in the name of glory and god...country and king...no doubt political bullshit from 2016-2018 has found its creeping place in the NFL, with all pro former LSU and 49ers safety Eric Reid barely looked at in free agency, due to his political views and outspoken African-American pride....which is scary as hell to an owner like Jerry Jones...Dan Snyder...And as much as they've been touted for circumventing racism for decades, the Rooney family belong here on this list thanks to the obvious deference to paying the white offensive leader (Big Ben) over the black offensive leader (Bell), who literally was the pulse of the team.
But no matter that, accidents happen, people aren't perfect: they just turn Bell's unwillingness to destroy his body for anything less than what he is worth into a scandal, while allowing and probably covering up Big Ben driving a motorcycle around town while committing a public rape on a freeway, going 77, with no hands on the bike.
Black players must earn the privilege, It seems, to be trusted or even considered a valuable asset by owners. Let's be realistic here....running backs are predominantly black....they usually have the shortest careers and harshly have been judged to have the shortest shelf life...is this true? Adrian Peterson is proving it isn't.
This is why the racism within NFL ownership must be exposed. Never have I heard an owner get riled up about a white player espousing his political views...but if a backup quarterback who happens to be black, who was nobody in the league (at that time) does it?
We must destroy them, they feel.
We must defeat their platform.
But in the end? All they did was broaden the issues, expand the platform, raise awareness to the players who are speaking out and made it clear who and what is to blame for the mess in the NFL.
Trump has come home to roost in the NFL ...the league that never wanted him as an owner, the league that tried to humiliate his own semi-professional league aspirations in the 80s...but now they all bow down.
2018 isn't a good time to be a young, black 4th round draft pick running back from a junior college.
More and more, we see the NFL treated as if it were war, players as soldiers...coaches as the foolish generals getting them killed for a special teams play....us fans and analysts taking stock without having to go into combat....the Roman coliseum is open for entertainment.
If teams were wars, the Pats would be the Crusades....and the 2013 Washington Redskins would be Vietnam. And the 0-16 Lions of yesteryear would be the script to Battlefield Earth.
So, what we've got is a big, jumbled, clusterfuck from top to bottom.
This should be fun.
